Algonquin officials seeking corporate sponsorship for pool locker room upgrades

ALGONQUIN – Village staff will begin talking to corporate sponsors to see whether anyone is interested in sponsoring locker room improvements for the Lions Armstrong Memorial Pool and splash pad.

The floor in the bathhouse has many cracks and layers of peeling paint, and it will cost $28,000 to repair, according to village documents. The floor also is slippery because of its old age, which poses a safety risk for residents who could slip and fall.

Officials have four proposals for trustees to consider: finding someone to fully fund the improvements with a sponsorship, finding private-public funding, having the village incur the full cost or leaving the locker room as it is.

Trustee John Spella said trustees would need to know what a corporate sponsorship would look like and consist of before having an opinion.

Village Manager Tim Schloneger said staff would begin finding out whether any businesses are interested.

Village President John Schmitt said at a Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday that he is not in favor of that plan, and the village has never used formal sponsorship like this before.

Trustee Jerry Glogowski said that the pool eventually will need a total overhaul of maintenance in five to seven years, and the village will have to consider whether to change locations.

The pool was built in the 1960s by the Algonquin Lions Club, and it was given to the village to operate during the 1980s.

Trustee Laura Brehmer asked how the locker room is maintained.

“Is there a bigger issue, and not just the floor, but also regarding the rusting or the screws in the stalls and drainage? I know we are maintaining it, but is there a bigger item here than just the bathhouse?” Brehmer asked.

Katie Gock said the facility has lasted for a long period of time because it is well-maintained, but it ultimately is an old facility that has not been updated much.

“Since I’ve been here, we haven’t done anything to update the bathhouse in general,” Gock said. “The floor is very old, and the grit is no longer there. We had hard plastic mats that hurt people’s feet as they walked through, so we used mats made from recycled tires.”

Gock said that each night the facility is scrubbed from the front to back with a bleach material.

A fully funded sponsorship could include naming rights and designated advertisements. A private-public funding model would have community partners display a logo inside the front entryway to the locker room.
