Crystal Lake insurance worker accused of stealing nearly $10K from employer

63-year-old took money from company over several years, police say

Robert E. Jost, 63, of the 1100 block of Revere Place, Vernon Hills.

A Vernon Hills man accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a local insurance company where he worked made his first court appearance Friday.

Police arrested 63-year-old Robert E. Jost last week on felony theft charges.

He is accused of stealing $500 to $10,000 from Crystal Lake-based Mars Insurance Agency Inc. in November 2015, according to a criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court.

Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Derek Hyrkas said Jost is believed to have taken about $10,000 from the company over several years while he was an employee.

It was not clear how long Jost worked for the Crystal Lake company or what his duties entailed.

Reached by phone Friday afternoon, Jost and representatives with Mars Insurance Agency Inc. declined to comment on the charges.

Jost said he plans to hire a private attorney.

Shortly after officers arrested Jost, he posted $1,500 bail at the Crystal Lake Police Department on Wednesday and was released.

A conviction of theft could land Jost between two and five years in prison.

Public records show Jost has no criminal history in McHenry County or Lake County, where he lives.

Further details surrounding the charges were not available.

Mars Insurance is a private agency located at 9 S. Virginia Road. It is the sister company of Woodstock-based R&M Auto Lease and Reichert Chevrolet and Buick, according to the agency’s website.

Jost made a brief court appearance Friday in front of McHenry County Judge James Cowlin.

He is due back in court May 14.
