Crystal Lake Central graduate and current Iowa Hawkeyes defensive lineman Romeo McKnight is transferring to Illinois State. McKnight announced his decision via Twitter on Tuesday.

“Thanks to all the coaches and schools that have reached out to me,” McKnight wrote. “But it’s time to get to work. Go birds!”

His commitment to Illinois State came two days after he announced his intent to transfer from Iowa.

McKnight spent two years at Iowa without appearing in a game. He redshirted his first season in 2016. As a redshirt freshman in 2017, he suffered a mid-season injury that kept him out of action.

McKnight was a three-star recruit coming out of Central, where he played defensive end and running back. He missed all of his senior football season with a knee injury. As a junior, he won the IHSA Class 2A wrestling state championship at 220 pounds.

McKnight told’s Robe Howe that the combination of his second knee injury and Iowa’s depth at defensive line led to his decision to transfer. Players who transfer from FBS schools to FCS schools can do so without having to sit out a year.

McKnight could not immediately be reached for comment.
