Authorities have made an arrest after intercepting a package that was on its way from the Netherlands and contained ecstasy pills.

Kane County Sheriff’s deputies, along with investigators from Homeland Security and the U.S. Postal Service, conducted a monthlong narcotics investigation into a package that was being shipped from the Netherlands to the 300 block of Jackson Court, Gilberts, according to a news release.

The package, which was believed to contain ecstasy, arrived at its destination at
12:15 p.m. Wednesday, the release stated.

Detectives then used a warrant to search the home and arrested the man who claimed the package, 20-year-old Nicholas Bennett. Officers also found 50 pills of suspected ecstasy with an estimated street value of $5,000, according to the release.

Bennett was taken to the Kane County Jail and charged with controlled substance trafficking, possession of a controlled substance and manufacturing and delivering a controlled substance.

The most serious charge, controlled substance trafficking, is a felony offense typically punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

He remained at the Kane County Jail on Friday on a $500,000 bond, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 16 in Kane County.

The Netherlands is one of the primary sources of ecstasy that is shipped to the U.S., according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

“Ecstasy is normally produced in clandestine labs with no oversight over what is used in the production process,” according to the release. “Investigators are becoming increasingly concerned that the deadly drug, fentanyl, is being found in some ecstasy pills.”
