BULL VALLEY – Renata Petersen admittedly didn't have the best summer and was eager to start fresh with her high school teammates.

On Thursday, the Crystal Lake Central sophomore posted the best score of her high school career, shooting a 5-over-par 76 at Boone Creek Golf Club to help lead the Crystal Lake Central co-op girls golf team to first place in the Marian Central Invitational.

Crystal Lake Central co-op, which is made up of golfers from Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South and Cary-Grove, claimed the season-opening tournament title with a score of 326.

St. Viator (344) finished 18 shots back of the Tigers. Prairie Ridge placed third with a 361.

St. Viator's Cate Reisinger earned medalist honors with a 1-under 70. Crystal Lake Central co-op had three of the top four individual scores, and the Tigers' four top golfers all placed in the top 17, earning medals.

Cary-Grove junior Molly Lyne was runner-up with a 75, Petersen placed third, and the Tigers' Kat Bevill (80) finished fourth. Crystal Lake Central's Arden Podpora (95) took 16th to round out the scoring.

Petersen was excited to see her offseason work pay off.

"This summer I was struggling a bit, and I was going through a lot of swing changes with my coach," said Petersen, whose first round of the season included a 40-foot birdie putt. "It's been hard to play with a mental block.

"Today, I just kind of went out there, trusted myself and stayed relaxed."

Petersen shot a 1-over 35 on the front nine with birdies on the par-5 No. 5 and par-4 No. 9.

"I was sinking every putt," Petersen said. "I was putting like a thief today. Everything was going in."

Lyne, the 2017 Northwest Herald Girls Golfer of the Year after tying for 12th place at the Class 2A state meet, started her junior season with a triple bogey on her first hole of the day, overshooting the green and splashing into the water, but responded by shooting 1 over the rest of the way.

"I hit a 7-iron probably as pure as I could, and it went over the green and into the water," said Lyne, who shot even on the back nine. "I had fun today, and I know the team had a lot of fun, too. Renata had the best round of her life. I was very happy for her."

Prairie Ridge had three medalists, led by senior Sophia Pascente with an 85. Senior Morgan Taylor added an 87, and freshman Elizabeth Tucker fired a 94 in her first high school tournament. Grace VanHyfte rounded out the scoring with a 95.

"I'm really proud of the girls and how they did," first-year Wolves coach Sara Kazlauskas said. "Some of the girls didn't live up to their own expectations, but ultimately, it's our first time out, and to take third place as a team, we couldn't be more happy."

Marian Central sophomore Lauren McNulty finished fifth overall with an 82 – a personal-best at Boone Creek.

Marian Central (382) took fourth, followed by Huntley (401) in fifth.

"I was very proud with how I finished," McNulty said. "I'm just looking forward to all of the meets and tournaments this year, just being able to play every day."

Also placing in the top 17 were Richmond-Burton's Lauryn Davis (85), Huntley's Katie Matustik (85), Johnsburg's Ceara Mulvey (93), Marian Central's Kelly Anderson (95) and McHenry's Sarah Fergus (17th, 95).
