Letter: Looking for another debate

To the Editor:

There is a urgent need for another debate between incumbent Republican Peter Roskam and his opponent Democrat Sean Casten in this critical House race in the 6th District. Another debate would afford an opportunity for Roskam to explain his position on health care where he has voted to kill the ACA and put in a system that would leave millions of Americans without coverage.

Since he has consistently refused to meet with senior groups, it is not surprising that he supports cutting back on Medicare. He would have an opportunity to explain why those that need additional money most are not benefiting from his tax bill. He consistently has used a made-up savings number that has never been substantiated.

He could explain why the main beneficiaries of the tax bill are the very wealthy and corporations, who use the money to buy back stock. Also he can tell his constituents why as their property taxes go up the amount they can deduct goes down, under his bill.

These are just a couple of his positions, he would have a chance to explain. For this debate, all the people who want to see the candidates should have an opportunity to do so up close.

Instead of defending his positions, he has used huge PAC contributions to run a series of misleading TV ads. The biggest question in a debate would be why Roskam supports President Donald Trump well over 90 percent of the time. He has done nothing to try to stop our out-of-control president. This is a critical race and one that could put us back on the path to the drafter’s intent of having a Constitution that provides checks and balances. We as constituents deserve another debate providing a chance to see Sean Casten and understand his positions and his desire to lead America out of the swamp Trump created and Roskam strongly supports.
