Letter: Where has Hultgren been?

To the Editor:

A recent mailing from Congressman Randy Hultgren included a survey (the first mailed in seven years) and an invitation to attend an upcoming town hall. In this mailing, which was “prepared, published and mailed at taxpayer expense,” Rep. Hultgren states: “I am grateful to hear from my constituents, which is why I regularly host coffees, forums on policy issues, meetings throughout the district and Congressional Conference Calls.” I cannot find evidence of these.

In the past two years, Hultgren has only hosted one event that was open to the general public. In May 2018, Hultgren hosted a “Community Leadership Forum on the opioid epidemic” featuring the U.S. Surgeon General. While Hultgren is great at photo ops during private events with selected and limited attendees, he’s not hosting regular events for his full constituency, despite many requests for such events. According to his website, the last time Hultgren hosted a coffee was in 2016. The last town hall that Hultgren hosted was in 2012 – six years ago. Hultgren is now doing six town halls, all within the same week, which also happens to be the week that many schools in District 14 are beginning their school year. Three of the six town halls are being held at noon and the other three are at 7 p.m. – all during the work/school week. This is far from ideal.

How interesting that the survey and town halls finally are offered just a few months before a hotly contested general election.
