After weeks of heavy rain, McHenry County is in the clear for the next few days.
A flood warning issued by the National Weather Service for portions of McHenry County near the Fox River ended Thursday.
The NWS issued the warning for areas including near the Fox River at the Algonquin Tailwater, the stretch of water immediately downstream of the dam.
On Thursday, the river was at
10.53 feet; the flood stage is 9.5 feet. The Fox Waterway Agency projected that the river would crest at 10.6 feet Thursday night.
Still, the portion of the river between the dams in Algonquin and McHenry remains closed, according to the agency.
New warnings
On Thursday, the NWS issued a freeze warning in effect from 1 a.m. to
9 p.m. Friday.
Temperatures will hover in the upper 20s and low 30s in the morning, meaning sensitive outdoor plants and vegetation will be killed if left uncovered, according to the weather service. A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or highly likely.
“We had a powerful system with a lot of warmth ahead of it and a lot of cold after it,” said Casey Sullivan, a meteorologist with the NWS in Romeoville.
He said the area will see highs in the mid-40s Friday and low 50s Saturday.
