A moratorium of about three months on smoke and vape shops in Huntley was imposed by the Village Board during its Thursday meeting.
The move aims to allow time for staff to analyze whether these businesses require additional regulation.
The resolution prevents the issuance of an occupancy permit or any other development approval or building permit for cigarette, smoke, cigar and vape shops until Jan. 24. Until then, village staff and planning commissioners will review existing uses and determine appropriate zoning classifications and regulations.
Some concerns raised by trustees during the board’s Sept. 27 meeting involved signage and establishments that sold knives in addition to tobacco and tobacco-related products. Further discussions indicated a concern over how smoke shops would affect new development within the village.
Huntley has three tobacco stores within about a 1-mile stretch on or near Route 47: Tobacco Hut, 10716 Route 47; Route 47 Smoke Shop, 10876 Route 47; and Best Price Tobacco and Gifts, 11717 Main St. There also is a Wise Guys Vapes shop at 12392 Princeton Drive, farther south on Route 47.
There currently is no cap on licenses that can be issued for new smoke or vape shops in the village, Huntley Director of Development Services Charles Nordman said.
