Letter: Vote for decency

To the Editor:

Since Donald Trump took office, I have watched this country go downhill. I’ve seen families split because of differences, I have seen friendships end because of disagreements. I’ve seen this country split because of race and women’s rights. I’ve seen the KKK and racist groups re-emerge. I’ve seen neighbor fight neighbor. I see farmers struggling because tariffs are too high and price increases in the grocery stores. Is Trump at fault? Yes and no. Because we have a House full of representatives and Senate full of cowards who are there because we voted for them to look out for us, the American people. What happened in the Senate is proof this is not the case. It saddens me greatly that we have come to this point. Republicans questioned in their minds if Brett Kavanaugh was telling the truth, and most had serious doubts but kept silent. Why?

Because they were afraid to go against Trump. Sen. Jeff Flake had nothing to lose (he is retiring). He suggested, he begged, as did others. There was no reason or urgency that the vote had to be taken when it was. However, the American people spoke up, called their representatives and senators’ offices and reminded them there is an election in November. Some will be retained, others not. So those Republicans who had doubts said they will follow Flake re: the investigation. Some agreed, but did not speak up, but I’m glad he did.

Can’t say how this will turn out, but I do feel, had these people been speaking up and fighting back all along this past year and a half, we would not be in this mess and the laughingstock of the world.

Kid yourself not, that’s exactly what we are. Time to change our government leaders, Time to change our election system. Time to shorten our campaigning and get rid of Citizens United, who buy our politicians. Many good honest and caring people would but can’t compete with the Super PAC contributing billions of dollar to candidates who vote in their best interest instead of ours.
