Letter: The cows are back

To the Editor:

If I could make it a headline, I would. The cows are back! I moved from Gurnee to McHenry in 2015. On the right side of Route 120 before Chapel Hill Road there stands a house with a large white barn complex.

Lots of cornfields surrounded the property. Every day, I would drive by and I would see maybe 10 to 12 dairy cows in a pen near the front of the farm. For some reason, I loved seeing them.

I think because it make me feel like I was part of a farming community. Maybe a little more laid back and friendly than Gurnee had become. I liked driving by the farm with the dairy cows instead of a shopping mall. Then, in 2016-17, the cows were gone. I thought maybe for the summer. Then I thought maybe they couldn’t afford to keep them and work the farm anymore. Maybe they sold them to someone else who had more time to care for them. I would look every day at that farm and think, “What a great place to grow up. So many hiding spots!” It was so white, so regal, so farm.

Then it appeared as if they had sold the farm and all the surrounding land to Thelen sand and gravel mining company. A long white fence went up along Route 120, past the barn, past the house, so I thought, “OK the farms days are over.”

And it made me sad. But recently, I saw the cows are back. I was so excited to see them. I don’t imagine they will like all the dust and trucks from the pit next door, but maybe they won’t be here that long. I was just surprised to see them again, and I’m wondering, “What now?”
