To the Editor:
A $150 one-time property tax rebate or Valley Hi Nursing Home? Sounds like an add for selling cars. Valley Hi is one of the most lauded services providers in McHenry County. Earning a 4 out of 5 star rating and inclusion in the National Quality Honor Roll for nursing facilities, Valley Hi rivals all private facilities in the county for standard of care.
The previous County Board and County Board Chair raided the reserves of Valley Hi. The Valley Hi reserves of $2.5 to $3 million was transferred to the county general fund so the county could claim an 11 percent reduction in the county levy.
The $150 taxpayer rebate makes for attactive headlines and serves as a rotten carrot to lead the citizens in McHenry County down the road to Valley Hi financial insolvency and ultimate privatization. Privatization of Valley Hi will make the facility unaffordable for many.
Personally, my 99-year-old grandma was admitted to Valley Hi in the very last weeks of her life. By then, macular degeneration and age had taken her sight and mobility. The deacon visited her daily.
Her caregivers were kind and caring. These little things gave her comfort in her final days. At some point in our lives a family member, parent or even ourselves will need Valley Hi. It's one of McHenry County treasures.
