Attorneys will give opening statements Tuesday at the trial of the former Hebron village president accused of possessing a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition while he was high on crack cocaine.

Jury selection for John Jacobson’s trial began Monday. If he is convicted of the most serious charge, possession of a firearm with a revoked Firearm Owner’s Identification card, he could be sentenced between three and seven years in prison.

Police arrested Jacobson more than three years ago after they were called to his home for a suspected overdose. After a police search of the house, Jacobson, 72, was charged with possession of a firearm with a revoked Firearm Owner’s Identification card, possession of ammunition with a revoked FOID card, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance. A judge later dismissed the drug possession charge, claiming police wrongfully searched the man’s home for drugs.

When officers arrived on May 17, 2016, they found Jacobson passed out, wearing only his underwear and taking shallow breaths, according to police reports. Inside the home, officers noted seeing a used crack pipe, a pill bottle containing suspected crack rocks, and a pornographic movie sitting in the open tray of a DVD player, according to police reports. They also found a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition, which Jacobson – who did not have a FOID card – was not authorized to own, according to police reports.

Jacobson’s had previous run-ins with the law. He faced drug charges during his 2013 campaign, after police said they found crack cocaine in his vehicle during a traffic stop. He pleaded guilty to amended misdemeanor charges after the election and remained in office. He was charged later that year in driving under the influence in Wisconsin, however, and finished his probationary sentence in July 2014.

Jacobson lost his village seat to Kimberly Martinez in 2017.
