Letter: Hypocritical celebration

To the Editor:

Celebrating our nation’s independence, freedom and liberty on the Fourth of July this year felt hypocritical when on this same day immigrant and refugee children were locked up in cages and concentration camps, suffering deliberately inflicted by our own government officials. The children are there for the crime of being brought to the border by fearful and yet hopeful parents who came in need of compassion and respect, but instead families have been separated, housed in overcrowded facilities and have not been provided with simple, basic needs, adding to their misery.

We are in a profound humanitarian crisis on our southern border. The criminalization of migration tactic developed by the Trump administration provides the justification to strip immigrants and refugees of their human rights. This is immoral and illegal. We are better than this as a nation. It is time to end the cruel confinement of immigrants and caging of innocent children on our southern border.
