To the Editor:
While the legislation pending in Congress requiring background checks for all gun purchases is a good first step, we need to go further. I agree with Ron Erdmann in his excellent letter of Aug. 7 that assault rifles and high-capacity magazines should be outlawed.
To those who say it will never happen, I think we have to at least try.
Fifty years ago, no one went to a large gathering fearful of a mass shooting. Can’t we give that safety back to our children and grandchildren?
