Letter: You get what you pay for

To the Editor:

I live in Algonquin Township. I don't like paying higher taxes any more than anybody else. So, the idea of consolidating or eliminating townships might sound like a good idea to save money, but there is a cost factor in doing that. I think many people are just hearing "it will lower your taxes." That's all some people care about.

Have we thought about what might be lost in the process? If "consolidation" is the way to lower taxes - why don't we eliminate township and county government and let Springfield provide all the services? That would really lower our tax bills, wouldn't it? Algonquin Township offers services that are important to seniors on a fixed income, like me. Will the County offer AARP Free Income Tax preparations for senior citizens?

That alone saves me $200 plus a year over going to a tax preparation service. Will my tax bill go down that much if the township disappears? Will the Senior Transportation Service be continued or stopped like it was in McHenry because of $8 a year on the tax bill?

Check out the Algonquin Township web page (algonquintownship.com) and click on services or events and you will see what the township offers. The question is will the county provide all the services the township does? If so, where and when?

It would reason that for "consolidation" to be cost effective, That all the township employees would be fired and all township equipment and property be sold. If the county keeps the township's building and equipment as a "branch" facility, that takes people and money to operate, so where would be the cost savings?

Before consolidation begins, I believe the county should publish a list of all the services they will provide after consolidation, compared with what the township provides now. They should also show were the savings will come from.

Let's be sure this is the right thing to do, because once it is gone, it's gone forever!

Remember, the adage, "you get what you pay for."
