Fox River Grove School District 3 approves scope of capital projects for next summer

Bid on them will go out later this fall

Fox River Grove School District 3 approved a slew of capital projects slated for summer 2020 at its most recent meeting. The bid for these projects are set to go out later this fall.

Although the district will contract out the work for these projects, it also will be doing some things on its own.

“We feel we can do it more efficiently with less cost,” District 3 Superintendent Tim Mahaffy said.

The district will complete casework alterations, the soundproofing of band practice rooms and electrical cord reel installation in STEM and science centers in its schools.

The construction items approved for the summer already were planned, but they had not been approved because the cost was too high this past spring.

At Algonquin Road Elementary School, repairs will include securing the entrance and administration addition, as well as interior remodeling of the existing office area. The Collaborative Learning Environment (Media Center) is set to receive air conditioning and new lockers in the surrounding corridor.

The school’s west wing will get a replaced ceiling and new lighting, and the east wing will receive replaced ceiling tile, as well.

The projects also will include site work to create a handicap-accessible route from the new entrance to handicap-accessible parking spaces, in addition to related stormwater management work.

Projects for Fox Grove Middle School include a remodeling of its Collaborative Learning Environment (Media Center) and STEM classroom; the remodeling of Room 104 for professional development; the painting of handrails, interior doors and frames; and altered wall locations, among others.

This past summer, District 3 worked on the little things it felt “nobody wanted to do” in-house, so the bid package going out this fall is smaller than it originally would have been, Mahaffy said.

For instance, the district did an asbestos abatement, purged all of the old furniture and rewired technology and phones.

Mahaffy said there will be a mechanical bid this fall before a full project bid goes out in October.

The district hopes to receive board approval and award the bids by Nov. 11.

Construction will take place in June, July and August, with an Aug. 15 target date to finish the projects.

“That will give us a good week before school starts that everything is done,” Mahaffy said.

The board budgeted almost $3.84 million for construction, but Mahaffy said the district is hoping to receive a lower bid and complete the construction at or below a $3.4 million budget.

The board has $400,000 in projected revenue it plans to transfer next year to finish paying its bills. If District 3 does not need the $400,000 because the bids come in under budget, the district will not complete the transfer, Mahaffy said.
