High school boys soccer insider: Postseason pairings, notes, rankings

IHSA Class 2A and 3A postseason pairings were released last week. Jacobs and Dundee-Crown are the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams in the Class 3A DeKalb sectional.

Those two played a tightly contested regional title match last year and could potentially meet in a sectional title game.

In Class 2A, Crystal Lake South earned the No. 2 seed in its sub-sectional behind Boylan Catholic (9-4-3). Woodstock comes in at No. 3. The Blue Streaks and Gators are both paired in the same regional, which South hosts.

Close losses: Huntley dropped three straight contests last week, but there was little shame in losing any one of them.

The Red Raiders lost one-goal games to Crystal Lake South (in overtime), Jacobs and Crystal Lake Central. Those teams are currently three of the top four in the Fox Valley Conference standings.

Huntley (7-8-1, 2-4 FVC) won two games last year and is much improved.

“We’re either really good or really bad,” Huntley coach Matt Lewandowski said following a 1-0 loss to Jacobs. “Things either go our way or they don’t. When it all falls together, we’re really good. We’ve shown that we can play with South. We played them 98 minutes. We played [Jacobs] all the way up to the last minute. They had, I think, one clear-cut opportunity and they finished it. That changes the game for you.”

On a roll: After something of a quiet start to the season, Crystal Lake South’s Alex Canfield scored nine goals last week over three matches. That included five goals in a win over Burlington Central and three more in a draw against Dundee-Crown. All five goals against Burlington Central came in the first half.

Entering Tuesday, Canfield has 20 goals and 10 assists this season.

“The Dundee-Crown game was something else,” coach Brian Allen said. “He was constantly double- and triple-teamed and still put up a hat trick.”

1. Jacobs (9-3-3, 5-0 FVC): Jacobs elevates into the No. 1 spot in the rankings as the only team with a perfect record in FVC play (prior to Tuesday’s games).

2. Crystal Lake South (10-3-4, 4-0-1 FVC): South and Dundee-Crown played to a draw for the second year in a row. The Gators will face Jacobs next week with a lot on the line.

3. Dundee-Crown (10-5-1, 4-1-1 FVC): There have been ups and downs for the Chargers. A draw against South was a positive result, as was a win over McHenry last week.

4. Crystal Lake Central (8-4-2, 4-2 FVC): Four straight wins has Central on the rise, including against Huntley and Cary-Grove last week in FVC action.

5. Woodstock (15-4, 9-0 KRC): The Blue Streaks continue to cruise in the Kishwaukee River Conference. They have already locked up a conference title and, remarkably, still haven’t allowed a goal in KRC play.

Crystal Lake Central at Dundee-Crown, 4:30 p.m. Thursday: Two of the area’s best square off in Carpentersville.

Hampshire vs. Lincoln-Way West, Fenton vs. Huntley, 1 p.m. Sunday: At the PepsiCo Showdown championship games in La Grange, Huntley and Hampshire will vie for titles. The Tournament's championship Sunday was rescheduled from an earlier date due to weather.

Jacobs at Crystal Lake South, 4:30 p.m. Tuesday: It’s possible the FVC title could be decided. At the very least, this game will have major conference implications.
