Driver critically injured in fiery crash in McHenry

A man was critically injured in a fiery rollover crash Friday night in McHenry, police said.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and McHenry police officers were dispatched about 9:30 p.m. to the
4500 block of Elm Street/Route 120 after a reported two-car crash, McHenry Police Department Public Information Officer Patrick Polidori said.

Both vehicles had been traveling east on Route 120 when one rear-ended the other, traveled off the road into a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot, struck a pole and overturned, Polidori said.

The vehicle then caught fire with the driver trapped inside. Police and a bystander rescued the man, who was flown via Flight for Life to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He remains in critical condition.

The driver of the second car was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with minor injuries, Polidori said.

The Critical Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash.

Route 120 was shut down overnight while police investigated the scene. The road reopened about 5:30 a.m.
