In light of recent corruption charges against Illinois elected officials, state Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, is supporting legislation to ensure members of the Illinois State Board of Elections aren't funding political action committees.

The bill, H.B. 3963, which Batinick is co-sponsoring, would prohibit a member of the State Board of Elections from also contributing to or being an officer of a state or federal political committee, according to a news release.

Republican senators introduced similar legislation, S.B. 2300, in their chamber.

"With the recent arrests and indictments handed down in state government, this is the latest ethics change that needs to be made to ensure that our legislative process is ethically sound," Batinick said in the release.

The bill also lays out the process by which members of the board must resign from political committees.

Specifically, it requires a member of the board serving as an officer of a political committee to resign from the committee within 30 days of their appointment confirmation in the Senate.

Also any current board members must resign as an officer from any political committee within 30 days of the effective date of the legislation.

Batinick introduced the bill at a news conference Wednesday with state Sens. Dan McConchie, R-Hawthorn Woods, and Jason Barickman, R-Bloomington, and state Rep. Tim Butler, R-Springfield.
