To the Editor:
Back in March, our Congress passed Bill HR1 to protect every voters’ right to have their votes be counted at the ballot box. This bill will reduce the influence of big money in politics and strengthen ethics rules for our public servants. It would increase cyber security and clamp down on foreign manipulation of our elections. HR1 will expand voter registration by limiting arbitrary removal of names from voter roles.
This bill was read by the U.S. Senate on March 14, but NO action has ever been taken on it. Why has
Mitch McConnell and the Republican leadership chosen not to protect our elections and our voting rights? Are they afraid to have ALL of our voices heard in an election?
Every year there are stories of illegal purges of voting rolls. Often, voters don’t learn they’re no longer eligible to vote until they actually show up at the polls on Election Day.
Citizens in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas and other states are clandestinely purged from voter rolls on a regular basis. This September, Ohio was set to purge 235,000 voters because Ohio requires every voter to be eliminated from their roles if they have not voted in the last two elections. Their records were proven to be incorrect 20% of the time. (This purge would have eliminated the Executive Director of the League of Women Voters).
Time is running out! We need this passed BEFORE the next election. The Senate should act immediately, whether passing or amending it and return it to Congress.
Write a postcard to the chairmen of the Senate committees that need to approve all the areas of this bill! Ask them to do the job they were sent to do!
