McHenry man killed in single-vehicle crash in Wauconda area

A 54-year-old McHenry man died in a single-vehicle crash Jan. 3 in unincorporated Wauconda, Lake County Sheriff’s Office authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a crash with injuries about 11 a.m. on West Neville Road just west of Darrell Road, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was identified as Michael Gaul of McHenry. An autopsy conducted by the Lake County Coroner’s Office indicated that Gaul died as a result of a medical event before the crash.

A preliminary investigation showed that Gaul’s 2016 Lincoln MKC was traveling west on West Neville Road when for an unknown reason the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

The car then rolled back into the middle of the roadway, the release said.

Toxicology results still are pending, according to the coroner’s office.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office’s Technical Crash Investigations Team is investigating the crash.
