Finding love after 65

Published:

Relationships are an important part of life, but finding a partner later in life can seem challenging.

There were more than 40 million Americans over 65 in 2011, according to the U.S. Administration on Aging, an 18% increase from 2000. A large number of these Americans are single, with 55% of women and 28% men over 65 stating they were unmarried.

The senior population has steadily increased with each passing year. With so many single people later in life, it’s not as hard as you may think to find love after 65.

Pepper Schwartz, a love and relationship expert for AARP, says travel and hobby groups and community classes are also places where older Americans can mingle. She adds that online dating shouldn’t be overlooked either.

There are several popular online dating sites or apps for those over 65, like AARP Dating, eHarmony Senior Dating and Our Time. Some offer a free trial or different membership packages to customize the site in a way that best suits you.

Senior living communities offer a similar environment with events and activities to meet others and spark new friendships. Assisted living and independent living communities – like Hearthstone Communities in Woodstock – contribute to seniors’ happiness and overall quality of life, according to A Place for Mom.

Taking a new relationship slow can help ease concerns from adult children who may be worried about their parent’s emotional and financial stability.

Bob Boyd, a partner with the Atlanta law firm Boyd Collar Nolen & Tuggle, says seniors have to think carefully about money matters if they are considering a second marriage, particularly after a divorce that may have already divided retirement assets and income.

Don’t be afraid to meet introduce yourself to someone new. Get out and interact in and around your community – you never know what that initial introduction may spark!
