Plan ahead, travel better on your next vacation

Do you have globetrotting on the mind?

If the winter weather already has you thinking about summer vacation, now is the time to plan.

Booking at least six months in advance can make for a better trip, especially if you’re considering a popular destination.

“You have better choices, there’s more availability, and better prices because typically there is some type of early booking discount offered,” said travel consultant Sue Swett, also owner of Crystal Lake Travel.

Often, hotels will increase their rates as the supply decreases, so early bookers can get better deals. And waiting too long to make plans means travelers may not have the best options for flights between destinations.

Another bonus to booking so far in advance? “Being able to get exactly what you want,” Swett said. Often, people put in for their vacation time at the beginning of the new year. “So if you’ve got your heart set on something you might find what you want isn’t available,” said Swett.

For spring break vacations, planning should begin in the fall. That’s because spring break, as well as the week of Thanksgiving, are one of the most popular times to go vacationing, Swett said.

“If people were trying to plan a spring break vacation at this point I’d be looking to see where there might be options for them,” she said. “Maybe someone had to cancel or if they can be flexible with their dates by a couple of days.”

Considering a cruise? Try to book at least six months to a year in advance.

By planning your vacation early, you can travel the world better.
