High school sports roundup for Wednesday, Sept. 18

Marengo won its Kishwaukee River Conference match, 25-17, 25-21, over Harvard behind 11 kills and two blocks from Lillie Simons on Wednesday in Marengo.

Abby Rohe supplied Marengo (10-5-2, 2-1) with two blocks and two aces, Isabella Simonini had three kills and two blocks, Lilly Johnson provided 20 assists and two aces, Alexis Kunde had five kills, and Kaetlyn Jeschke had 13 digs and five aces.

Aylia Lemus led Harvard (2-11, 0-4) with three kills. Alex Cooke had two aces and three assists.

South Elgin 2, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, the Chargers dropped their nonconference contest, 25-22, 25-21.

MacKenzie Field had seven kills and two blocks, Natalia Smiech picked up seven kills and three blocks, Makena Wesol had seven kills, Jenna Brown supplied 17 assists, and Mia Seaton had 14 digs.

St. Charles East 2, Cary-Grove 1: At Cary, the Trojans (10-4) won the first set, but the Saints took the second two for a 15-25, 25-20, 25-17 nonconference victory.

Evynn Layshock and Julia Rice each had seven kills for C-G. Mia Soltis had 12 digs, Lauren Passaglia had 12 assists, and Jenna Splitt served five aces.

Johnsburg 2, Richmond-Burton 1: At Richmond, Makayla Huff had 21 assists as the Skyhawks (2-8, 2-2) won their KRC match over the Rockets (3-10, 1-3), 25-14, 15-25, 25-18.

Alexandra Burke and Hayley Schmidt each had six kills, and Sheridan Milewski and Shannon Flynn each had five kills for Johnsburg. Rayna Wilkinson had two aces.

Prairie Ridge splits: At the Wheaton-Warrenville South Classic, the Wolves defeated Oswego East, 25-17, 25-14, and lost to Benet Academy, 25-18, 25-13.

That puts Prairie RIdge (6-4) into Silver Bracket play when the tournament finishes on Saturday.

Trinity Sheridan led the Wolves with 16 kills in their two matches. Hannah Baudin had 18 assists and six kills.

Olivia Jost had 12 digs against Benet, and Samantha Johnson had six digs and six assists against Oswego East.


Marian Central 3, Prairie Ridge 2: At Crystal Lake, the Hurricanes (6-4) did not lead until the 65th minute when Jonathan DePrey scored off Mateo Raso's assist in their nonconference victory.

Alex Pajak and Brogan Amherdt scored for Prairie Ridge with assists from Michael Kusmierz and Bennett Barr.

Each time, Marian came back to tie the score, first on Nate Iafigliona's goal off Dominik Drwila's assist, then on an unassisted goal from Christopher Ghita. The Hurricanes scored all their goals within a 16-minute span in the second half.

Marian's Matthew Jablonski had nine saves in goal.

Harvard 5, Marengo 1: At Marengo, Oger Bernal scored twice and added two assists in the KRC win.

Jovani Escobar had a goal and an assist. Manny Mercado and Juan Silva also scored for Harvard. Aldo Popoca made seven saves in goal.

Richmond-Burton 3, Johnsburg 1: At Richmond, Hayden Rudkin scored twice, and Hugo Campos scored once as the Rockets (8-4, 4-1) defeated the Skyhawks (1-7, 0-5) in their KRC game.

Campos scored first on Rudkin’s assist in the first half. Rudkin then scored from Campos in the second half, and later from Ethan Demers. Jacob Maldonado had five saves in goal.

Michael Grunder scored an unassisted goal for Johnsburg.


Richmond-Burton 192, Marengo 209: At Marengo Ridge, the Rockets (6-5, 5-2) won their KRC dual meet against the Indians.

Connor L'Esperance and Jordan Grons each shot a 47 for R-B, Ryan Eskuri carded a 48, and Eric Gordon shot a 50.

Marengo's Tyler Nelsen was the match's medalist with a 43. Brady Cannon shot a 44.

Stillman Valley 180, Harvard 212: At Abbey Springs in Fontana-on-Geneva Lake, Wisconsin., the Hornets dropped their nonconference dual meet.

James Crout topped Harvard with a 49, and Jake Chopich shot a 52.

Crystal Lake South 156, Marian Central 178: At Crystal Woods in Woodstock, the Gators posted four scores of 40 or lower as they defeated the Hurricanes in a nonconference dual meet.

Ricky Falbo shot a 38 to take medalist. Will Steward and John Lishchynski had 39s, and Spencer Shireman had a 40.

Brogan Pivnicka shot a 40 to lead Marian. Quinton Urban and Bennett Arza had 45s, and Owen Jager shot a 48.

Huntley 159, Crystal Lake Central 162: At Turnberry in Lakewood, the Tigers’ Eric Klutke shot a 1-under 35 on the front nine to win medalist, but the Red Raiders won the FVC dual meet.

Cole Modrich (37), Evan Bendis (39), Graham Holmes (40) and Danny Sheedy (43) were the scorers for Huntley.

Brayden Hubacher (40), Quinn Hankins (43) and Ethan Bass (44) had the other counting scores for Central.

Woodstock North co-op 187, Johnsburg 233: At Bull Valley in Woodstock, Charlie Neff shot a 44 to lead the Thunder to a KRC victory over the Skyhawks.


Richmond-Burton 220, Marengo 221: At Marengo Ridge, the Rockets edged the Indians by one stroke in their KRC dual.

Makenna Donohoe led R-B with a 48, Darci Rutherford shot a 51, and Alaina Robinson shot a 54.

Carlie Seeman shot a 50 for Marengo, Adriana Georgiades carded a 54, and Brooke Aubry had a 57.

Burlington Central 170, Hampshire 177: At Randall Oaks in West Dundee, the Whip-Purs lost in an FVC dual.

Hampshire's Gianna Farinella was the match's medalist with a 40. Delaney Marcuccilli shot a 42, Alexis Konajeski had a 46, and Maisie McNamee shot a 49.

Harvard 186, Stillman Valley 197: At Beaver Creek in Capron, Jennah Brookner shot a 44 to lead the Hornets to a nonconference win.

Emma Ackland was one shot behind with a 45. Joelle McMillan shot a 47, and Julia Chupich had a 50.

Huntley 164, Crystal Lake Central co-op 166: At Pinecrest in Huntley, the Tigers’ Molly Lyne shot even-par 36 on the front nine for medalist honors, but the Red Raiders won the FVC dual.

Katie Matustik led Huntley (5-1) with a 39. Molly Baker (40), Lorelei Oomens (41) and Taylor Stephenson (44) rounded out the Raiders’ scoring.

Renata Petersen shot a 39 for Central, with Abby Rubsam (43) and Jo Greeley (48) as the other counting scores.

Prairie Ridge 192, Jacob 194: At Chalet Hills in Oakwood Hills, the Golden Eagles’ Lauren Kempf shot a 38, the best round by seven strokes, but the Wolves came away with the FVC dual meet victory.

Elizabeth Tucker and Katie Gilmore led Prairie Ridge, both with 45s. Ellie King shot a 50 and Joie Gindorf had a 52.

Roslyn Leitner shot a 48 for Jacobs, while three other teammates had 54s.

Marian Central vs. Nazareth: At Carriage Greens in Darien, the Hurricanes’ Lauren McNulty shot a 6-over 41, and Ava Notaro had a 49 in their match against the Roadrunners. Marian has only two golfers.


Grant 6, Woodstock 1: At Fox Lake, Kelly Fischbach and Sarah Colby won, 6-6, 6-3, at No. 4 doubles for the Blue Streaks’ only victory in the nonconference dual meet.
