A 31-year-old Chicago man accused of possessing $11,400 worth of ecstasy is due in court Friday on child pornography charges.

Matthew P. Kus of the 1000 block of Loyola Avenue remained at the McHenry County jail Thursday on a series of charges alleging he possessed sexually explicit images of children younger than 13 years old.

He would need to post $14,000 bail to secure his release. Possession of child pornography typically carries a penalty of three to seven years in prison.

Kus was in custody at the McHenry County jail on separate drug charges when the most recent charges were filed against him.

Kus and another man were arrested in July after a traffic stop by a McHenry County Sheriff’s Office deputy, according to the criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court.

Detectives found that the men were in possession of 114 grams of MDMA, commonly called ecstasy, according to the suspected drug affidavit.

Kus has not yet hired an attorney to represent him on the child pornography charges, and the public defender’s office has not been appointed.

The attorney who represents Kus on the drug possession charges, Edward Donahue, could not immediately be reached for comment.
