Letter: Political polarization jeopardizes American leadership

To the Editor:

If Britain’s parliamentary shift serves as a proper indicator, Americans are smart enough to understand the developing factions ahead of our 2020 general election.

Decades of political polarization has led us to this moment: a battle that will rage between the forces of right- and left-wing populism.

A void of political strength exists, and within this odious vacuum of American stewardship, the two political extremes will appear at the forefront.

This perfect storm will grow as a result of an inability to form consensus and forge progress, and the fires of contempt will be stoked by our corrupt corporate media and feckless leadership.

Our best hope of preventing this undesirable and nearly inevitable scenario is to reawaken the hearts and minds of the American people.

Ironically, in an age with growing centralized power and technological advancements, astute observers understand that the power of the individual is even stronger, and we must utilize this empowerment in the betterment of ourselves and, subsequently, in the service of our country.

We must remind our government that it works for us; in order to do this, we should mount a pressure campaign unlike any other.

The U.S., fueled by the might of the American people, must return to regular order in the halls of Congress.

Most importantly, we must foster civil discourse, act upon a shared vision and listen to the stories of our fellow Americans.

These three actions have the power to move mountains and return our nation to the pinnacle of world leadership and respect.
