Looking for some outfield depth after apparently being unable to bring back free agent Nick Castellanos because of financial reasons, the Cubs might have found a replacement candidate in Steven Souza Jr.
According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Cubs and Souza have agreed to a one-year contract, pending a physical.
Health has been a major issue for the 30-year-old outfielder the past two seasons, when he was with the Diamondbacks. Souza suffered a serious left knee injury at the end of spring training in 2019 and missed the entire season. Health issues limited the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder to 72 games the year before.
In three seasons with Tampa Bay (2015 to ’17), the right-handed hitting Souza batted .238/.327/.426 with 63 home runs and 167 RBIs in 378 games.
