Letter: Back The Blue Rally - a more clear picture of support

To the Editor:

I participated in the Back The Blue Ride on Saturday, June 27, which was hosted by Woodstock Harley-Davidson. It was an extraordinary turnout to support our police who put their lives on the line every day to protect us and to maintain law and order.

Participants were respectful and deliberate in their positive actions and support. I felt honored to participate in a unified show of support for our police men and women.

Then I read the Northwest Herald coverage, which said "Back The Blue gathered a few hundred participants from all over Illinois."

What?A few hundred? I obtained a verified count of bikes to be 892 plus 20 others without bikes. It was a sea of supporters!

It would have been more accurate to report "close to a thousand" but you can also capture the magnitude of the event in many ways. "A couple hundred" wasn't it.

I've rode in some large charity rides, but the Back the Blue turnout was exceptional and it's important to accurately report the scope to understand the level of support for police by the "silent majority" (ie: residents).

The point is: either report accurately, or don't report at all. We don't need biased reporting. We have enough of that from the likes of CNN and MSNBC and don't need that here in McHenry County.
