Letter: Don’t give away your vote for coroner

To the Editor:

Funny how Chairman Jack Franks would like the citizens to hand over their vote to a bunch of politicians. Remember when Franks wanted the county chairman to be elected by the people and now is asking voters to turn over power to other politicians?

Sheriff Bill Prim, whose lieutenant serves as the interim coroner, has stated that he believes the coroner should remain an elected position, but his view wasn't part of the Northwest Herald article.

If Franks is so concerned about the qualifications of coroner and is using that to justify appointment over election, why doesn’t he speak to the lack of qualifications required for other positions?

For state's attorney, the requirements are to be 21 years old and have a law degree but no requirements on experience. For treasurer, the requirements are to be 18 years old but no degree or experience required.

For sheriff, the candidates have to be at least 19 years old, but there's no experience required. And for state representative or senator, the age required is 21 years old but again, no degree or experience and you get to make laws!

They complain about few contested coroner races. Franks ran nine times for state representative and very rarely was contested. Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan has almost never been contested in over 45 years as state representative. I guess the same rules don’t apply.

Franks signed the contract of Dr. Dennis Kellar, circumventing the County Board. Franks said the possible $30,000 was to come out of the general fund, which he has zero authority to do.

Dr. Kellar, in his so-called Coroner's Office independent report, called the citizens who vote for the elected coroner position "stupid."

Franks is under investigation for sexual assault and stalking. Is this the kind of politician you want to hand over your vote to? Vote no to keep the elected coroner!
