Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

From both sides of our political divide, I have heard the demand to "take our country back." I wonder if any thought has been given to what that would involve, how it would be accomplished or what the end result would be.

It seems to center on differences of opinion that are used as the rationale for animosity. The dictionary does not define 'enemy' as someone with a different opinion. Viewed objectively, our current behavior is best described as political temper tantrums.

One would have thought that our national health crisis would have provided the catalyst to remind us that we are all in this democracy together. Incredibly, it has made the political divide wider. We seem utterly unable to defend our democracy with the same tenacity that we defend our opinions.

All of this will wind its way to resolution. In the interim, we must do the best we can to defend ourselves against the virus and against nations that would do us harm. But our biggest challenge is to defend us from ourselves.
