Give thanks to volunteers during National Volunteer Month

SPONSORED

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, dedicated to honoring volunteers in the community as well as encouraging volunteerism throughout the month. April became National Volunteer Month in 1991 as part of President George H. W. Bush’s 1000 Points of Light campaign.

As we prepare to celebrate, “We would be remiss if we didn’t bring to light the work all volunteers do day in and day out for residents of McHenry County,” said Volunteer Program Director Aly Halberstadt.

For the Senior Care Volunteer Network, it’s a time to recognize those who aid in achieving the organization’s mission to provide seniors the best support necessary to maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life.

More than 250 individuals annually give of their time to the organization. Last year alone, SCVN volunteers logged in close to 20,000 hours.

“Whether it be helping a neighbor take out the garbage or assisting to install hand bars in a bathroom, McHenry County volunteers show up with a full heart and a giving hand,” Halberstadt said.

Some of that time is spent helping to fill the transportation gaps within the county by providing no cost transportation to seniors who need to get to doctor’s appointments, activities at senior centers, the grocery store, and more. In 2019, nearly 9,000 rides were completed for McHenry County seniors.

“Being a part of such a giving county creates a sense of community that is difficult to find elsewhere,” Halberstadt said. “Whether you have benefitted from someone’s helping hand or are a volunteer yourself, it’s a safe assumption to say most people have been affected in one or another by volunteerism.”

Join Senior Care Volunteer Network in celebrating the impact of those who serve.

“April is a month set aside specifically for the givers of this world, the ones who help without being asked, and the ones who ask for nothing in return,” Halberstadt said.
