Sleeping with white noise

SPONSORED

As adults with hectic, modern lifestyles, we often find that sleep is low on the list of priorities.

When we’re frantically juggling work life, home life, and family time, it’s easy to tell ourselves that we can get by on less sleep in order to fit more activities into the day. However, science has shown repeatedly that adequate, quality sleep is a crucial part of physical and emotional health.

Adults need seven to eight hours of shut-eye per night for optimum cognitive performance, yet more than 70 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders or insomnia. When we get into the habit of poor sleep hygiene, it can paradoxically both leave us exhausted and make it more difficult to fall asleep when we finally do get to bed.

If you’re trying to get your sleep schedule back on track, it may help to try some relaxing white noise or music for sleep. Chances are, you’ve heard of “white noise” before. White noise is a frequency of background sound, often used to help you fall asleep faster or stay asleep.

If you’re the type of person who can’t focus when it’s too quiet, white noise may help. Silence accentuates a single sound and diverts your attention. But people find that noise through a sound machine or music can help them to fall asleep faster too.

Evidence has shown that white noise helps to promote sleep. It masks other noises, like the slam of a car door outside that could wake you up, and it creates a continuous ambient sound. Examples of white noise include static on the television, the hissing sound of steam coming from a radiator or pink noise. Pink noise is similar to white noise, but it is louder at lower frequencies. Examples of pink noise include leaves rustling, waves lapping or a steady rainfall.

If you’re looking to listen to one of these noise colors to get to sleep or improve your sleep, you’ll want to experiment with the type of volume and noise, since not all people respond the same way.

You can download a variety of noise apps onto your laptop, tablet or smartphone. Before you go to bed, turn on the noise app and fill your room up with sounds to help put you to sleep.
